Diving below the liminal threshold into the subconscious, we will rely on the knowledge held in the physical body to create a series of work. In the process, we will rely on the use of the tjanting tool to flesh out the inner language through symbols and line-work.

This workshop is an intertwining of a practice in contemplation and intuitive painting in encaustic. To set a contemplative state, we will begin by exploring and excerpt of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet and practicing some somatic movement to settle both the body and mind. While this inspiration is percolating in our spirits, we will explore basic encaustic painting techniques and delve into abstract expressionism with our paintings.

The instruction will also delve into pushing past the ‘ugly’ painting, or sense of negative judgment about one’s work. No matter your style of painting, learn to better attune to your inner language and release from attachments and perfectionism that inhibit your painting process. If you frequently find yourself stuck, questioning the value of your work, struggling with your inner critic, or procrastinating getting into the studio, the process taught will be a pivotal part of growth in your creative process.

Since we will be working in a series in this workshop, we will also address establishing a color palette for the work. Some pre-work that is take note of color combinations out in the world, in your wardrobe, in type and other artwork, in nature, etc that catches your eye. We will also focus on building encaustic layers and history in the work.

Amanda Jolley utilizes the process of intuitive painting as a communicative device to express the patterns and metaphors emerging from her subconscious. Amanda’s mediums of choice include both encaustic painting and paper folding which she incorporates into this intuitive process. A staple in her work has become the use of embedded line-work as an expression of internal symbols and mimicry of the creases produced from paper folding. Amanda’s paintings are shown internationally both in solo and group exhibits. She also has a large-scale (12×6 sq ft) commissioned permanent installation at the University of Kansas Medical Hospital. She instructs and hosts workshops that draw an international audience from her studio in Kansas City MO US.
