Encaustic Exploration from a Contemplative Platform
Instructor: Amanda Jolley
Date: Sun, Mar 25, 2018
Location: Studio Joy, 608 E 30th St, Kansas City MO 64109
Maximum: 10 students ** FULL **
Basic encaustic painting experience required
This workshop is an intertwining of a practice in contemplation and intuitive painting in encaustic. To set a contemplative state, we will begin by exploring writing of Rainer Maria Rilke utilizing the four movements of Lectio Divina: listening, savoring, hearing and resting. While this inspiration is percolating in our spirits, we will explore basic encaustic painting techniques and delve into abstract expressionism with our paintings. The day will encompass a response, expressed in encaustic form, to the revelation from the morning’s reading.
The instruction will also delve into pushing past the ‘ugly’ painting, or sense of negative judgment about one’s work. No matter your style of painting, learn to better attune to your inner language and release from attachments and perfectionism that inhibit your painting process. If you frequently find yourself stuck, questioning the value of your work, struggling with your inner critic, or procrastinating getting into the studio, the process taught will be a pivotal part of growth in your creative process.
