Amanda Jolley: Intermediate Encaustic Workshop

Maximum: 12 students **FULL**
Building on the basics, this intermediate encaustic workshop is also technique forward. The focus will be on demonstrating and then experimenting with the techniques shown. While still demonstrating techniques to be used on a panel, we will also be experimenting with other substrates and creating monotypes.
In this workshop, we will learn the basics of encaustic painting including:
- Making medium from scratch
- Using a torch
- Exploring alternative substrates
- Creating monotypes
- Approaches to collage
- Creating a dimensional surface
- Using a tjanting tool
- Masking/stencil work
- Dipping
- Pouring
Student Supply List:
- 4-6 – flat or cradled birch panels or Ampersand Encausticbord no larger than 10×10. These panels can be ‘in process’ from the intro workshop the prior day or fresh panels.
- 1 – 4×4 or 6×6 cradled birch panel, no gesso.
- No panels that have been pre-gessoed for acrylic painting
- Optional items if you have them, carving & scraping tools (pottery tools work wonderfully as do any other metal tipped tools), ephemera for collage, etc.
All other supplies will be provided.

Lunch: 12:30-1:30
Fabulous restaurants are within walking distance or bring a sack lunch. A refrigerator and microwave are available.
Notice: Janus, the studio cat, frequents Studio Joy and while she will not be joining our workshop, please bring any allergy medication if you may need it.

Amanda Jolley utilizes the process of intuitive painting as a communicative device to express the patterns and metaphors emerging from her subconscious. Amanda’s mediums of choice include both encaustic painting and paper folding which she incorporates into this intuitive process. A staple in her work has become the use of embedded line-work as an expression of internal symbols and mimicry of the creases produced from paper folding. Amanda’s paintings are shown internationally both in solo and group exhibits. She also has a large-scale (12×6 sq ft) commissioned permanent installation at the University of Kansas Medical Hospital. She instructs and hosts workshops that draw an international audience from her studio in Kansas City MO US.

Studio Joy strives to be accessible and accommodate the needs of its students. The old building does not allow for ability to accommodate all physical needs, but accommodations can be made for table height, type of seating, and most sensory issues. Please communicate your requested accommodations when you register.
Travel:
Do not book travel until confirmation is received that the workshop has reached its minimum required enrollment.
Refund Requests:
Students will receive a full refund of tuition less related transaction fees if a request to withdraw is received by Amanda Jolley, Studio Joy no later than 30 days prior to the first day of the workshop. At 15 days prior to the workshop, 50% tuition less related transaction fees will be refunded. Request to withdraw from a course less than 15 days prior to the first class session will not be eligible for refunds.
Cancellation:
Students will receive a full refund of tuition if at 30 days prior to the workshop, the minimum required enrollment is not met.
